I am attending a wedding in a week... and am confused if this wedding is supposed to be formal or informal attire. The invitation says nothing about attire or if it's an adult only reception.
The wedding is on a Friday, but the cermony starts at 6pm.
The invitation is embossed, but the address is handwritten in print
The cermony and reception are in the same place.
I am wearing a dress, but I am worried about being underdressed or overdressed... do I wear a bright floral cotton spring dress? Or do I wear a black silk dress? I have never been to a wedding in which I have been so unclear on what to wear.

Since it is evening, I would stay on the dressier side. The black silk sounds more appropriate than the cotton dress.

I would go with the silk black dress because it's in the evening. Plus, I'd rather end up being overdressed than underdressed. It feels less awkward. If you know anyone else attending the wedding, call them and ask what they are wearing. But, you can't really go wrong with a black dress.

Traditionally a wedding that is held at 6 pm or later is considered a formal affair. As for what the invitation looks like, a handwritten envelope is also tradition, it shows that the bride took the time to personally invite everyone instead of allowing a printer to do it.
I would go with the black dress.
Have a great time!!

I've never received a wedding invitation that mentioned anything about attire. I've always assumed that at least semi-formal attire is what is expected at any wedding. I've never gone to any wedding dressed in anything less than semi-formal. Especially if its an evening reception. Those are usually on the dressier side.

A little black dress can pass as both classy and casual depending on how it is accesorized. Just put a brightly colored scarf in your handbag to dress it down or keep a small necklace or strand of pearls to keep it dressy.

With a black dress you can never go wrong at an evening event.

Call up the bride to be and speak with her about your concerns. To me with what you describe, it is probably formal and a dress is fine. Evening attire would be a silk black dress or a color and you will be just fine, but if you are really concerned, call the bride to be up first.

I would wear the black dress since it is an evening wedding, unless it is taking place outside.

Sometimes people do expect you to decide what is appropriate.

I would wear the black silk....it's in the evening so I think your safe. You could bring another outfit with you incase you feel your to overdressed...then you could change at the party.
