Some of his ranting obviously sounded like he was loising touch with reality, but does anyone knowledgeable on mental illness have any ideas on what may have been wrong with him? Bipolar? Schizophrenia? etc?

I have to agree with one of the other guys. I don't think that he was a sociopath or psychopath (antisocial personality disorder) because these two often do not know right from wrong and I do certainly believe that he knew what he was doing was wrong.

On the other hand, he seems to fit the paranoid personality disorder because of the following characteristics...

~Pervasive mistrust and suspiciousness of others.
~They think that everyone is out to get them.
~They always think that there is an underlying meaning to everything.
~They have angry outbursts
~pathological jealousy
~They also think that everyone else around them has a problem but that they are fine.

With bipolar he does fit the mania part and grandiose delusions.

Here is the main one that I think that he fits the most.
Paranoid Schizophrenia...

~Lack of motivation or being catatonic
~having no facial expression (flat affect)
~Not speaking (cho didn't speak that much)
~They think that people are coming after them
~They have delusions and hallucinations
~They will actually hurt others in order to protect themselves.

I am certainly not a doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist or whatever .. I don't have the qualifications to say a damn thing.
But, I am bipolar.. have been dealing with it and researching these things for my own benefit for a long, long time.

No doubt, he had a spinning head with a lot going on in there.. If I had to make any guess at it, based on what appers to be the case .. I would say it was maybe a severe manic episode of Bipolar Disorder or possibly Schizo-affective Disorder. He also showed many determining factors for Borderline Personality Disorder with a General Anxiety component as well...

Schizophrenics may lose complete touch with reality, but they are rarely dangerous to this extent. Most just want to be left alone and not cause problems. When people get delusional in the manic phase of bipolar, they are dangerous.
People can throw the psychopath or sociopath tags on him.. but for that to be a correct assumption, I think it would have to be known if his intent when he went there was to do as much damage to as many people as possible. If all of the killings were in the same place at the same time, I would be more inclined to go along with it.. but that 2 hour gap in between when he went from one place to another contradicts this.

Do your own research .. make your own assumptions :)
The more people that look into these things, the faster the walls of stigma can be broken down.. and then we might be able to work towards preventing these things in the future.

I don't think we should assume that he had a mental disorder just because he carried out this terrible act. From what i've heard on the news, it sounds as though he was quite isolated and not part of a social group, and had perhaps had time to dwell on what he saw as injustices without the balancing effect of other people's views. Plenty more people without a diagnosis of mental disorder have done terrible things than those who are 'mentally ill'.

i heard somewhat of an analysis by a psychiatrist on Fox News. There was a chemical imbalance, plus, he was depressed and paranoid. The chemical imbalance influenced his actions but did not determine them. there is a separation between the physical brain, and the mind. a person can have an imbalance and be evil at the same time. No name was attatched to the condition. He had lost his sense of reality. But I would venture a guess: paranoid schizophrenic.

I was watching MSNBC and they were talking with a specialist on campus crimes from NYU (I think) and she said he was probably Schizophrenic.

She also was mentioning video games a lot even though there was no basis for those statements. This guy was obssessed with violence in anyway you get it.

understand that in his video he compared himself to Jesus extremely some circumstances. i imagine it truly is extra important than his writing "Ismail Ax" on his arm. i do not trust this toddler replaced into doing this for any non secular causes, i imagine he had substantial psychological issues and finally snapped.

Well we do know that he had depression. So if I had to guess then I would just agree with Ashley.
