Spelled correctly (with another 'i' at the end - a repeat of the last character), it would translate to "cute". It is pronounced "kawaii".

dylan, kawaii is not a pop culture term. it's a term borrowed from chinese, and it does mean cute, though written like かわい it's missing an extra い - (kawaii)

with characters, you can write it like 可愛い。 it's not often written like that, true, as it is a term people throw around and don't necessarily want to write 20 + strokes for.
