They look like clams except that the edges of the shells are in a "scallop" pattern.

The flesh is more or less white about the size of touching your middle finger to you thumb.
There is the coral which should be a fresh orangey colour (often discarded).
The shell is flattish on one side and ribbed on the other like the "Shell" petrol logo.

About the same as they do when cooked. Most of them are just an off-white color and usually shaped like a rounded-edged cube of muscle. And they're really good!

you know the shell station sign? that is the shell they are in
they are white to pink flesh...depending if they are male or female... and absolutely lucious with some lemon
saute, pan fry, put in a fish dish..yummy
