There have been some remarkably positive changes in adoption within the last 20 years.

There are basically three types of adoption and each have different benefits and risks to all of those involved and the costs vary greatly as well. I'll briefly describe each here, but please check out www.adoption.com for tons of reliable information:

1. Waiting child adoption - This option is the most affordable and the state usually helps with all legal costs associated with the adoption. Children available for adoption by this method are usually in the state's custody. Typically, waiting children available for adoption are between 3 and 18 years of age. Many are considered to be special needs as they may have emotional, behavioral, or medical issues. There are rarely any legal risks involved because all parental rights are terminated prior to these children being moved to the adoptable list.

2. Domestic adoption - This option is an affordable option if a non-profit agency is chosen whose fees are based on income. However, some agenices are consideralby more expensive than others. Costs range from about $10,000 to $30,000 for this option. Typically, babies are placed with the adoptive parents at or shortly after birth. There is a longer wait for caucasian infants and a shorter wait for multi-racial adoptoins. This is also the riskiest option since parental rights are not terminated until days, weeks, and sometimes months after placement and a birthparent changing their mind could potentially result in the adoptive parent's having to relinquish the baby. (This is the option we chose, twice!)

3. International adoption - This option is the most expensive with the cost ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 depending on the country chosen. Legally, there is little, if any, risk involved after placement. The ages of children available for adoption also varies from country to country. Typically, children available through international adoption are anywhere from 6 months of age and on up.

I hope I've given you enough information to kick start your research and to give you an idea of your options. Remember too that U.S. taxpayers can receive the adoption tax credit, regardless of the type of adoption chose. This year's credit was $10,960. So, most families are able to recoop their expenses.

Good luck!
