Emil von Behring, in 1901

Emil von Behring, 1901, for his development of a serum to treat diphtheria.

I think at the time, he was just Emil Behring, and the "von" was an honorific given him by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

His jealous detractors claimed that the title went to his head and he became "over-behring." Nevertheless, Behring did remarkable work, and was associated with many of the "giants" of nineteenth century bacteriology. One of his mentors, Robert Koch, received the Nobel Prize several years later.
