They understand. They just can't answer it logically because if they applied logic to it, their religion would come into doubt. God is imaginary, and mankind created the concept. But many people are weak and unable to handle existance without a god so they'll use every excuse in the book to justify it, no matter how ridiculous.

No one created God. He was, is, and always will be, the Alpha and the Omega. Whether or not you understand this does not change the fact that he IS.

From your logic, everything must have a creator. Well, following that premise, what initially created all of the matter which the universe contains? Think about it. If someone created God than God would not be perfect for a creator cannot create something better than themselves.

We Christians could ask a similar but more logical question: Why is it so hard for atheists and agnostics to realize that there is something beyond what we see and understand? Why do they shut-out the science which has proved God exists but embrace the junk science with it's unanswerable holes?

Christians can UNDERSTAND this simple sentence. What you mean is, why don't they BELIEVE this simple sentence.

BTW, it is not just Christians. It is also Muslims, Jews, Hindu, Buddhist etc.

Why don't we believe?

Look at it this way- There is a computer in front of you. In millions and millions of years it can never be made without man. We are not God or gods, but we still had to put computers together in order for them to exist.

Now, I like to think we are more complex then computers. Yet in the belief that there are not greater forces in our universe, you are saying we are nothing more than a cosmic accident. That means computers were put on this earth purposely, for a real reason . We, however, were not. We have no purpose, no mission, no meaning- we are simply a speck in the universe consisting of meaningless groups of molecules that just happen to move.

I find that to be very depressing.

To answer your question of why we don't we believe your simple sentence- Because we don't want to.

Belief is the essence of faith. What kind of convictions would we have if a "simple" sentence would change our core beliefs? I can only speak for myself, but my character is just not that weak.

Anyway, why should you care? Does being an atheist make a person intolerant? If not, let it go. Stop making atheism into religion.

Believing in your convictions means you are at peace with them. Being at peace means you do not feel the need to tear down other's beliefs. That kind of behavior indicates insecurity.

So be at peace with your convictions and allow other's their own, without such disdain. After all, in the end (according to your beliefs) we simply cease to exist the minute we die. So what does it matter if we are delusional or not as we gasp our last breath? I will take my comfort where I may. For atheist, the only comfort at that moment is that you stuck to your convictions. I hope it serves you well.

God [notice the Capital "G" here Julia] did not have a beginning.

Humans cannot comprehend that because everything they know of HAS a beginning.

Even Jesus had a beginning:

Jesus is Jehovah’s most precious Son—and for good reason. He is called “the firstborn of all creation,” for he was God’s first creation. (Colossians 1:15)

There is something else that makes this Son special. He is the “only-begotten Son.” (John 3:16) This means that Jesus is the only one directly created by God.

Jesus is also the only one whom God used when He created all other things. (Colossians 1:16)

Then, too, Jesus is called “the Word.” (John 1:14) This tells us that he spoke for God, no doubt delivering messages and instructions to the Father’s other sons, both spirit and human.

If there is no god/God, then how did we come to exist? Evolution would be the next good answer. What if god/God also evolved? The average religious person seeks an ultimate power and an ultimate point where the buck stops. Perhaps it isn't there. Perhaps there is and we're it. Perhaps there's a silent power above us. Who knows?
To put it another way if god/God doesn't exist then what created us? Perhaps we're an accident? If so, couldn't god/God also be an accident, but just a very complicated one? Again - You can prove god/God is unlikely, but you can't prove it/he/she/they aren't there. Christians often use "faith" as an excuse for quite shocking anti-social behaviour, but they do have a reasonable excuse for not understanding your question - it begs too many others.

Okay apparently you don't understand what you just said. If God created everything then nothing could have created God. God created time, so he must have been infinite because time hadn't existed until God created it. If God created everything that makes Him all powerful. If He is infinite then He stands outside of time and thus can be in multiple places at once, so He is Omnipotent. By saying God created everything, you are saying that He is above all thigns and thus cannot have a creator.

For Jim K. If based on your idea there has to be something to create something, then what created the something that is used to create something? Your logic is basically impaired.

If something has to be there, why can't that something be universe itself which was created by imploding and exploding itself, renewed when the energy is fully imploded and then exploded again? In which this blob of energy will neither increase or decrease? The energy imploded will be transferred to energy exploded.

Can't you understand simple science and logic?

-----

For Jim :

I am using what you had said.... You said you cannot comprehend something from nothing so someone must had created it. I am telling you if you said someone must had created it, then who created the creator. You said he was there all the time, you are just slapping yourself in the face.

I am comparing the two, which is more believable,

A single entity that had never been proven created the universe and yet does not know where or who created himself that is always there.

or

A place you are at now.

(Louis Pasteur was a biochemist who said life is from life, but you are taking it out of context. What he meant is life is evolved from another life form. Similar to Evolution concepts, now, we would not want to go there, do we?)

God is the self-existent, self-sustaining source of all things: He is the Creator, but being eternal needed no beginning.
For the other side of the argument: if the cosmos is all there is, where did it come from? Dawkins et al are silent on this matter, thus proving atheism needs to accept something as pre-existent, and hope that by brainwashing people from cradle to grave with evolution they'll just accept it on faith.

Then my friend, Christians can shoot right back at you and say who created all the crap in this universe? It materialized out of thin air? Christians cannot understand that sentence b/c they can shoot it right back at anyone. Also religion is based on faith, just like the theory of Big Bang and evolution is based on faith. That is why WE can't understand. What happened to the universe exactly 6 billion years ago? Impossible question to answer, I don't think we will ever know.

What created what was before the earth we live on? The universe existed then... the vast endlessness of space existed. Black holes, stars, supernovas, etc. What created the universe? Dimensions that crash together and separate again... What was before all this? God. And that's as far as my imagination can go.

Christians believe that God is infinite. It is not too hard a concept to accept after all mere numbers are also infinite, that is positive numbers are infinite and negative numbers are also infinite. It is us humans who have a problem with this simple sentence. Our minds cannot comprehend the immensity of creation, of the universe.
