The A_B ones have better programming software (more intuitive to use and more obvious which contacts are true). The A-B ones are also a better physical package in terms of robustness and clearer indicator lamps for I/O status.

I work in the circuit board industry, Siemens is the most popular. As far as what the other guy said about support? I never had problems. Allen Bradley is good too, but Siemens is known as #1

Allen Bradley:
simple, sturdy, good support, does the job (expensive)

Siemens:
complex, cheap, bad support, does the job and gives you a headache (expensive)

But my personnal favorite is Modicon
very simple, sturdy, good support, does the job and less expensive.

Allen Bradley is concentrated in the North American market. Siemens is world-wide, so obviously it dominates in foreign region. But that is due to their intense marketing effort, not the quality of the product.
