Barbecue is not a way of cooking anything. It is a type of dish with meats cooked with a lot of sauce. Usually ribs, tri-tip or chicken. If you mean to grill a steak such as a t-bone or rib steak forget the marinade, that is good for London broil or cheaper cuts of beef.
To grill a steak, put pepper on it, never salt as it will dry the meat. Put it on the grill for a few minutes to sear it. Turn it over and when the juices stat to to come out it is done to a good medium rare.

Many recipes and grilling cookbooks recommend grilling steak over a direct-medium fire (350°F to 375°F) on a covered grill (to keep a consistent temperature and reduce flare-ups).
For grilling times we use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. Enter the details like the cut of meat, thickness and doneness you want and it will give you instructions for how to grill steak the way you want it. It also has grilling tips.
Here are a couple of other basic things to consider. Allow the steak to stand at room temperature for 20-30 before grilling, and let it rest for 5 minutes after grilling to keep it nice and juicy.
If you're relatively new to grilling, you might want to start with the more dense cuts like NY strip and sirloin, then as you gain experience move on to more tender and marbled cuts like filet mignon and rib eyes.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Bbq is slow and low. I use charcoal and a hard wood that is soaked in water so it smokes real good. My babyback ribs take about 4 to 5 hours to cook at no higher then 250 degrees.
No sauce is required but to cook a good steak on a low heat for a long time adds the bbq flavor itself.
Anything else on high in a fly is GRILLING.
