Before there were superheroes like the ones we see in the comics, there were ‘tall tales’ about cultural heroes, like Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Mike Fink, Wild Bill Hickock, and others. There were also totally fictional characters like Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan.

I don’t know that the appearances influenced that much… maybe style and fashion, but not too many people wear coonskin caps any more.

The influence was more in the culture. They were a part of the American attitude of “We can do it! We can find a way! We can build it!” Many of these people were ordinary men who rose to the challenge.

So, in a sense, maybe the rise of super heroes led to the average man thinking that he COULDN’T find a way, or reach his dream, or achieve something great, because he didn’t have powers.
