The skullcap worn by the Catholic clergy is called a zucchetto.
All Catholic clergy are entitled to wear the zucchetto.
+ The Pope's zucchetto is white
+ Cardinals are red
+ Bishops are violet
+ Priests and deacons are black
Some think that Zucchettos go back to when clerics shaved the center of their heads into a tonsure. Zucchettos would help keep thier heads warm.
With love in Christ.

It's spelt yarmulke
Also, the pope does wear a white hat that looks similar, but really its just a hat that he and other cardinals wear by custom. The hats that the Cardinals wear are Maroon and the one the Pope wears is white. Yarmulke's are usually blue or black and are often decorated.
The final difference is that in the hats they wear it's a little higher then the Jewish religious yarmulkes

A Jewish source says that It was taken from the Jews as a custom sometime around the 5th century. A Catholic source puts the regular wearing of the zuchetto by clerics later, in the 14th century.
Jews wear kippot (Hebrew; yarmulkes in Yiddish) to show respect for God. It is likely that Catholic clerics began wearing it for the same reason...and to keep their heads warm.
