Her parents asked YOU what to do? No wonder the girl is in trouble. Her parents are clueless. They need professional guidance, and they ask a teenager. And you ask strangers on the internet. I sincerely hope you are making this whole thing up.

This girl is obviously not emotionally mature enough to deal with "life" right now, so a child psychologist would probably be the better decision of the two you suggested. Psycotherapists, or counsellors, most often deal with adults. In a situation as serious as this, I suggest being as specific as possible. If you can find a therapist who works exclusively with preteens, that would be even better. Depending on the severity of the suicidal attempts, I might even suggest the preteen be temporarily institutionalized, as to prevent any further damage. I would also like to add that it is probably normal for the parents to be unsure of what exactly to do in a case like this, but they really ought to ask someone more knowledgeable, such as a counsellor at the preteen's school, or a family doctor.

Most therapists now days just put them on medication, anti-depressants and stuff which doesn't resolve anything, it just helps cover it up. The therepy I've seen the best results from, was getting ahold of a youth pastor (for me, I've seen results through christian church, but thats only because thats where I go, not sure stats for other churchs) but I am against anti-depressants etc. I think you need to find the root of the problem, and get it resolved. If you take her to therepy, dont let them put her on meds, make sure they actually help her!
good luck, hope this helped at least a little.

1. have the parents call a psychiatrist as soon as possible. She should get a 24 hr pager number and told that if she has any kind of thoughts of harming herself she should call. ESPECIALLY if she's only 13!
2. if she makes any kind of suicidal gestures, jokes, comments, you have to confront her: "are you thinking of killing yourself". If she says no, ask her why not. If she can't answer you or avoids the question then assume she is suicidal.
Don't take it too lightly because previous suicidal attmepts are a desperate way to call for help. Also, please relaize that her parents are on the border of neglegance.

She may have to be hospitalized for a period of time. To be under 13 years of age and trying to kill herself, that is just awful! If they have a family doctor, have them get a recommendation from their doctor for a good psychologist or psychotherapist, don't take her to a psychiatrist.

i was 12 when i went into an adolescent psychiatric ward. i had also tried to kill myself. it seems like this may be what she needs. if someone is suicidal at 12 she is going to have a mental illness such as depression or -like me - bipolar disorder.
the hospital can protect her from herself and monitor her while they try to find the right medicines for her - so she can feel better faster - its not going to be fun and she will probably be mad but its worth it .
good luck!

The best place for this family to start helping their daughter is in front of their family doctor or her pediatrician. But the whole family needs counselling as well.

Go and get her hormones tested by a naturopath. Could be adrenals or thyroid. Once the deficiency is identified through blood testing as well, she will be fine... the only problem is that insurance doesn't cover natural cures.
