Why do you think that during the reformation, simony, which means selling of postions, should not have been performed?

Simony denies the teachings found in the Bible that God gifts and calls people to positions in ministry. The very origin of the word explains why it should never be done.

Simony is the ecclesiastical crime of paying for offices or positions in the hierarchy of a church, named after Simon Magus, who appears in the Acts of the Apostles 8:18-24. Simon Magus offers the disciples of Jesus payment for the power to perform miracles.

Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.

I should think the answer to that would be pretty obvious.
When leadership in the church is for sale to the highest bidder, is it any wonder that we get leaders who aren't worth the money they earn?
Unhappily "simony" is stil being practiced in the denominations today...we don't call it that, or recognize it as such, but it is there, none the less.
And you can bet your best Bible cover that God recognizes it.....
