Nah, I really doubt it is worth it. For what you want to do (comuting), it's just too much money.

There are a few things that maybe would be worthwhile, like the rear hub, but I think you will just spend too much money.

Go for XT or LX level, they're very good, and the difference in price between XT and XTR is almost double.

yes, it is worth it! but only if you are serious about riding. if you just ride to commute or for occasional rides, Altus will work fine. i have an 06 rapid rise rear derailleur and the difference in shifting is unbelievable. mine cost $120.

not sure on the '06 set, but the '07 complete set runs over $3000. yes you read right 3 THOUSAND dollars. these are not your average bike trail components- theyre hardcore racing precision instruments. they take advantage of the highest quality aluminum, carbon, and titanium available and everything is speced to perfection. this is the ultimate for any XC racer.

if you want to upgrade, dont go any higher than the Deore. you can get those parts for roughly $250, including a wheelset. they are reliable, fairly light, good looking, and pretty darn inexpensive.

For everyday riding and the abuse that normal components will take, Atlus is very economical. Verses XTR, can handle everything you throw at it, I would save it for a special bike that is worth it.
Most techno guys would use XTR on a custom frame like top end bikes. Meaning the price fo the frame justifies the parts.

to start, yes its worth it, but not for comuting if you leave your bike locked outside. your morgage for two months probably won't pay for the full package, but you can buy avid brakes instead since they're tried and true. I think the full package is around $3,000 depending on where you buy it-that includes the 1,000 dollar wheelset. Avid brakes are the best when it comes to both mechs and hydro's. personaly i run BB7 mechs (avid also) and i love them. Also look into SRAM- the sx7,sx9 and sx0. they just look beter to me
