I met someone on-line and I have been talking with him on the phone for about 3 to 4 weeks, he has been going through a rough time and just told me last night that he loved me for who I was and it was not a sexual or physical thing. I am trying to figure out just what he said.

Pffftt. Sheesh. Overall, without the original context, I'll have to go with my long experience in online chatting etc.

It mostly means nothing and anything.

Guys often use this line as a get out of jail card (whew) ...

or... Guys will sometimes honestly not want to get involved and consider this the wisest course of action -- either for the gal's protection (he is interested but knows he shouldn't be given his situation) ...

or ... It's also a common come-on line to see how far this gal is wanting to go to attract you, or if she's finding you a complicated, interesting, sad but mysteriously engaging fellow ...

or ... it's often used by the predators as a deep plan E approach to take in nice women or more often younger one's such as teens or precocious younger one's who are looking to be understood and bond with someone who understands their pain, their separateness, etc ...

or ... It's often used by teen boys who have learned it as a tactic or are very confused inside or are non-committal but sensitive etc ...

You see what I mean, it really doesn't say much. You'd have to know the guy really well to really know.

Internet emails, forums, and chat are the realm of intentions, thoughts, and emotions. It generally is not the realm of actions and reactions under real stress situations (such as the waiter getting the order wrong, the taxicab splashing puddle water over your dress and him laughing -uh oh , or changing his son's diapers ). Even group chat is not much more than seeing his code and lines at play in something akin to party conversation.

At best internet communication is poetry, beautiful and stimulating, but too much poetry will probably kill you (Anne's lines to Captain Beckett in Jane Austen's Persuasion is worth a read if you dare) and the most useful thing is probably going to a forum on a specific subject, such as a hobby site, you can test it's truth and reputation in that forum is based upon knowing enough to please the other hobbyists, etc.

I'm afraid I've been around too many blocks, so as a guy with too many miles on him let me caution you -- it may not mean anything worth a darn -- every shark online knows that most women online are one over either by feigned sensitivity or feigned confidence -- it just takes a good hunter's eye to pick the right approach -- and there are many prey a day to go after. The predator need not be true to one prey, but the prey looks for one savior at a time.

Good luck to you.

It can't possibly be a sexual or physical thing because they have never met you in real life. It sounds like he is trying to be sweet and caring (which could be genuine) but I would tread carefully.. he may just want the sexual thing, but to make it your idea

It means he doesn't want it to get any further than the Internet...to cool your jets.
