Well, let's take a comparison, say, a theocracy like Iran with a nominally Christian but functionally atheist state like Sweden.

Hmmmm.....

What like the Muslims and Iraq, or the Muslims and the Tsunami?
Have you seen the Muslims pray to their God?
Not ONCE a week on a Sunday, NOT two or three times a week!
More like EVERYDAY!
So should your question be:-
Do countries that suffer, do so because God is first in their lives?

No, they do so because god is not in American's lives. Did you know that most countries that are suffering because of drought or famines or theAids epidemic owe such a huge debt to America thathey can't afford to help their own people< because they have to pay off the interest on this 'loan'? If Amearica didn't collect on this debt yearly, millions of people would be living a better, recher life

the term "suffering" has many variations. It depends on one culture and standard. We could probably say that lack of basic necessities are indeed a suffering situation. If we observe history, when the industrialized world emerge only then the suffering world appear. Isn't it before colonialism that new world is already well develop.
They are maybe lack of technological things, but they are indeed contented with simple lives.
Contentment is the right bases for rich and happy lives.
But of course some countries lack even food and water, but isn't it their own countrymen that causes this suffering? lets say Africa and Middle East. Isn't the time for develop countries to save this country for good. Instead of spending billions of dollars for developing weapons of destruction?
The world suffer today not because of God, but because of our own selfish and egostic desire for fame, power and glory.

Sure but then you could break it down to states & cities. Would you say that Iraqis are dieing because the pray to other than god. Hurricane Katrina was it because people in the south don't put god first, well that would apply to New York too. look at the economic boom in china are the putting god first. I think none of us can escape life with out suffering

America suffers.
Africa suffers.
Europe suffers.

It is real simple.
There are Invisible Spiritual Laws that The Creator put into this Earth, and basically operate on Auto-matic.

You reap what you have sown, sums it up.
To operate these Law's to be Blessed, follow the 10 Commandments.

Now, there is another factor that works for Evil and Wickedness 24/7.
satan and his angels.
They will and do attack all Human Beings, for Cursing.

Then, throw in the Curse that Adam let into the Creation.

Last one is Chance. Chance happens to all Men, male and female.

These are almost all of the Variables that determine Blessing and Cursing on Planet Earth.
Anybody, Lost or Saved, can and do operate these Laws, all of the Time, for Blessing and Cursing.
Ditto...........

Countries suffer because this is a fallen world. It is true that if they were within the Kingdom of GOD then they might have more joy but this is a condemned world.
