Certain disease causing organisms, like the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or the parasite that causes malaria, sneak past our immune systems, Consequently we cannot build effective immunity against them.

In the case of HIV, the virus actually disables the body's immune system. There are some really intelligent people working on this, but so far our best scientists have not found the cure.

Actually, much money is devoted to AIDS research, but obviously not enough. For a disease that was virtually unknown before 1980, it has been a "front burner" issue ever since.

To say that pharmaceutical companies are blocking efforts to effect a cure seems outrageous and ridiculous to me.

Well, we haven't found a cure for cancer yet either, but I definitely think we should be spending more time and more on AIDS research. Did anyone hear the recent statement by UNICEF?

*2.3 million children under 15 are infected with HIV, and 15.2 million children under 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS

* One of 10 young pregnant women in the capital cities of sub-Saharan Africa is infected with HIV, and one in three children born to women infected with HIV will contract the virus.

* Only one in 25 children born to mothers infected with HIV receives drugs that would prevent infections that could be fatal.

This is just shameful. You can't tell me the world can't do better for these people!

There is no profit in curing diseases...while there are literally trillions of dollars to be made maintaining and treating patients with these afflictions and conditions.

The manufacturers prefer to make pills (that they can sell at a nice profit) to help people live with the disease - rather than devote time and research money into actually figuring out how to truly eradicate the problem.

And please don't be gullible enough to fall for their collective propaganda B.S. that they really do want to cure AIDS/HIV and cancer and diabetes and MS and MD, etc.

Unfortunately, that is what the drug manufacturers and research labs have chosen to do...get rich instead of ridding the world of these dreadful and hideous diseases.

They have chosen capitalism over of humanitarianism. It gives a better return on investment (ROI) in their shameless, greedy shareholders.

BTW, some of the top shareholders of drug stocks are municipalities (local governments/cities) school districts/educational organizations, and the ever present, ever money-grabbing politicians.

That would be a great question to ask the current crop of presidential wannabees, isn't it?

"Do you own drug maker stock?"

"If yes, how do you sleep at night knowing that people are dying needlessly, everyday - all over the world, while you and your drug company executive buddies and lobbyists get richer and richer."

We have yet to cure a virus. We have come up with vaccines to prevent various viruses; however, we cannot cure viruses. The immune system has to fight off viruses by creating antibodies. If the immune system is the part of your body being attacked (like in HIV) it cannot create antibodies to combat the antigen invaders.

HIV mutates...which makes the race to find a vaccine even more difficult.

HIV mutates a lot and therefore it is very hard to create a vaccine that mimics its activity, scientists are constantly working on it but it's not easy

hiv is a disease that lowers your bodies abbility to fight off other diseases. people are researching ways to stop this disease but there is only so much they can do. u need to look at wat you kno how it is spread, how long it takes to affect yer body, stuff like that and then u need to find things that will kill of teh bacteria that wont do to much damage to the body itself. and thse things take time and aids has only been around for about 30-40 years. which really isnt along time compared to cancer.
