My husband needs help! Is this a hemorrhoid?? It's bleeding and really painful.?

My husband needs help. I've told him to go to the doctor, but he's too embarassed to go. He told me about a 3 days ago he thought he had a hemorrhoid. He said it hurt and I bought him some cream. Well this morning he woke in a lot of pain and the sheets were soaked with blood. I begged him to go to the ER, but he won't. I got online to see what I could find to help him and on one site it showed pictures of what a hemorrhiod looked like and he said the place where he was bleeding and hurt was not actually on his rectum. That it was about and inch or two away. I always thought they were tissue that was coming out your rectum. Neither one of use have had them before, so we are not really 100% sure. Is there anything else that it could be or has anyone ever had this problem before? He says it feels like a big knot. I don't think it's a boil, pimple or infected hair cause there was a lot of blood. Thanks for your help and I know this is gross!

From the way you describe it, it sounds like your husbamd may have had a pilonidal cyst. This is a cyst at the bottom of the tailbone that can become infected and filled with pus.

Early in the process of the cyst, sitting in a warm tub may decrease the pain and lessen the chance that the cyst will develop to the point of requiring medical intervention.

However, it is usually best to see a doctor, particularly if you have any of the following symptoms:
pain at the bottom of the spine (tailbone)
swelling same area
redness
fever
notice pus draining from area

A pilonidal cyst is really an abcess so needs to be drained to get rid of the infection and encourage healing. It will also relieve the pain you are experiencing. You were very lucky that it went away on its own the last time.

BTW, these cysts are usually caused by ingrown hair at the end of the spine. When the doctor drains a cyst, he usually also removes the hair. Please note, there are several surgical options...some which will really lessen the chances of a recurrence. A straight "incision and drainage" will not decrease the chances of a recurrence but it will relieve your pain and symptoms and it is the fastest healing of all methods.

Please tell your husband not to be embarassed to see a doctor. Unfortunately, this will come back and it is better to see a doctor than to suffer. He may need an antibiotic so he should see a doctor now for a check on the area.

My GI doc treated me pretty much the same for my post-partum fissure (ouch!) and hemorrhoids (ick!). This really worked for me, so maybe it can help you! Sitz baths morning and night for at least 20 mins in the hottest water you can stand. Easier said than done with a baby to care for, but try your best.
