In the past, manufacturers of knock-off copies of more popular guns, would slightly change the name on their firearm but almost virtually copy the original.

Having said that, J. Stevens was a popular brand, bought by Savage and since, I believe has changed hands again. Stevens mad a " Crackshot Favorite" in rifle and pistol if my memory serves correctly. It would be single shot and very simply made but very affective.

So, you either have a knock-off ( if it really says Stevells) or it is a Stevens. They usually are pretty used up but hopefully yours is an exception. The town should be Chickopee Falls.

There is a company by the name of Savage Arms that bought J. Stevens and Company. I am sure of the name J. Stevens, not Stevells.
