It seems more to me that a fixed wheel is better, and that it is more expensive than a pop-off wheel, but I've heard other arguments also.

That is a good question.

A quick release wheel and a bolt on wheel have the same "holding" power onto the frame, so that shouldn't concern you.

However, the axle of a quick release wheel is actually stronger than a solid axle. Let me explain...

In general terms, a tube is stronger than a rod of the same diameter and material. It tends to be stiffer and is lower weight (although functional weight is not a concern here). A quick release axle can be considered a tube with a rod running through it so you have a much lower chance of breaking or bending it.

If you are talking about what I think you are, a fixed front wheel would make fixing flats a whole lot slower. Much easier to use the quick release to pop off the wheel and replace the tube on the go.

I think the fixed front wheel is better.
If you can pop it off quickly, so can everybody else, and there are enough mean people around who will steal your front wheel just for fun.
You will have to fix a flat maybe once a year.
You have to lock each wheel of your bike every day.

your comparing a solid axle vs. a quick release. solid axes are a fraction stronger than QR, but the ease of using a QR beats it by far. just flip the lever, unscrew a bit, and the wheel pops right off. on the other hand, you need a wrench to remove the nuts, then pull off the wheel. QR axles take quite a beating before they get damaged too. double that if you have titanium skewers.

the strongest axles are the 20mm [front] and 12mm [rear] solid axles used on freeride and downhill rigs. new technology has allowed QR versions, but they require a special hub, fork, and frame mounts to allow for the oversized axles. thats the expensive part.

The quick release system is better, since you don't need to raid your tool kit to change a tyre. If you have a spare tyre a pump and some tyre irons, you should be able to sort a flat tyre in about 4 mins. If you have to faf about with spanners to get your wheel off.....

Do you reside in a small city? some youngsters stole my $30 scooter. I reported it, so as that if I ever observed somebody with it, i might desire to have a criminal leg to stand on. I observed the little punk driving it, and flippantly reported as the non emergency line on the pd, and reported that i might desire to work out somebody in possession of my stolen sources, then gave the female the checklist selection. An officer got here out, have been given me my scooter lower back, and had slightly chat with the youngsters mom. in case you think of you have a gamble of recognizing somebody with your bike wheel, checklist it.
