l own and breed miniature poodles, they are very smart 2nd in the league of smartest breeds, they are easy to train and not as hyper energetic as the border collie making poodles a more suitable pet for most people.
they don't shed any hair but do require regular grooming and clipping and this should be taken into account when you are looking at different breeds.
You need to give a little more info to be able to answer this question properly.
What do you want your smart dog for? Remember owning one of the more intelligent breeds doesn't always make them easier to train as they can outsmart the owner. Also the more intelligent the dog = the more mental stimulation required to keep the dog happy. No good having an genius dog and expect him to sit at home for hours while you're out at work, the dog ends up entertaining itself usually by tearing your house up to relieve the boredom!
Take a look at a rescue centre and see how many collies are in there, closely followed by german shepherds and a lot of the more intelligent breeds as thier owners couldn't cope with the amount of training and stimulation they required and quickly dumped thier uncontrollable dog.

I agree with the collie so beloved of most answerers but only if you can ensure it gets LOTS of exercise. These dogs will run 30 miles a day and still not be tired! They really suffer from being cooped up.

A good breed for general training is, IMHO, the labrador. They love to please and are phenomenally greedy for food so they will do anything for treats (beware not to overfeed). As with all smart dogs they like to work but since they like to do retrieving tasks they can get a good work out without too much land to run on. They probably suffer less than most active breeds from reduced exercise but the food must be carefully controlled.

Young labs can be quite excitable but are almost never untrainable. They are great with people and find it easier than some working breeds to be dominated (never let a pet be dominant - it will ruin your life!). They are very loyal and love to sleep when not working.

This is all a big generalisation and each dog will be different but on average I reckon the labrador retriever probably makes the easiest to train home pet.

Wishing you well with your new pal

The smartest are not always the easiest to train - especially if they are smarter than you!!!! It is all to easy to train them the wrong way & then it's very difficult to rectify that training. Without doubt, the smartest dog is the Collie/working sheepdog but they are not necessarily the easiest to live with - you really need to give them a job to do or they become destructive. Many of the Spitz breeds are also very very smart - but they are not that bothered about pleasing you, so not always easy to train. I understand that Poodles are very trainable (don't have any experience of them myself).
The German Shepherd is very intelligent and easily trainable if you are reasonably experienced & can deal with that stubborn streak!
Bitches in any breed are generally more biddable than the males.

Caution! "Smart" dogs (like Border Collies and Jack Russells) can be very difficult to train. This is because they are so smart that they get bored easily and have minds of their own. Check out some online breed selectors and look for "Trainability" rather than intelligence. I have heard one dog trainer say, "I'll take a dumb Golden Retriever over the smartest Border Collie any day. The Golden Retriever will be a snap to train" Another caution; hounds can be very difficult to train b/c they are so busy sniffing that they get easily distracted. Cheers!

There was a book written on dog intelligence several years ago that concluded that border collies were the smartest breed of dog. The border collies I've met are very smart, but (like most smart dogs) they're also incredibly energetic and need a LOT of training and a very firm, committed, and consistent owner. Sometimes a moderately smart dog is actually easier to train than a super-smart dog - they aren't always trying to outfox their owners!

In general, dogs that have been bred for working (herding/guard dog work) are smarter than those that have been bred as companion dogs. Hunting dog breeds fall all along the spectrum, from genius to dumb as rocks. Of course, there's a lot of variation in all those.

Bichon Frise are super smart. Mine is only 11 weeks old and I've had her 2 weeks. She already can sit, lay down and fetch everytime I throw a ball. However smart and easy to train are completely different things. She is super smart but willfull, if you got the time to train a Bichon you will reap plenty of benefits but it will be pretty time consuming. Plus, they are notorious for being difficult to toilet train. She has no interest in using the pads we put down for her and even though we treat her each time she goes on the pad or outside, she doesn't really get it. However I have the time to be with her alot and invest alot of energy and time in her. Plus she is the cutuest, most loving little fluff-ball. The hard work will be worth it in the end. Whatever breed you decide to get, the initial training will be time consuming and sometimes frustrating. And remember, that even if you research the breed thoroughly, the individual animal may not always conform to the description. Each dog has it's own personality and may be the opposite of the breeds description.

You would have to ask yourself what you want from your dog, there are so many intelligent breeds that inexperienced handling could become disasterous. If you are not experienced then I would recommend a labrador or retriever, they are loyal and uncomplicated. I have rottweillers and they are the smartest dogs I have had, but they need strong training, they are agile and love to jump and swim, but they will dominate you if you don't know what you are doing.
