You answered yourself - "is IT a person or thing?"
"It" refers to an inanimate object or a non-human one.
"Person" refers only to humans.
(But don't ever make the mistake of telling my dog he doesn't have a 'personality' - which is a different matter entirely.)
[And, stricly speaking, 'a dog' is not a noun, 'dog' on its own is.]

A gal can be called a "dog", which means she is skanky, and that is an ADJECTIVE, in that usage. Also, to "dog" someone, means to be following them, and that is a VERB, not a noun in that usage.
Other than that, a "dog" is an animal, which is a THING, and a thing is a NOUN.
Hope that helps......

A Dog would be classified as a "thing" even though there are a lot of dogs that I prefer to some people. :)

A dog is a thing unless you know someone you would call a dog. Though they would still really be a person.
