At my first OB appt. for this pregnancy the other day, I pointed out this bump under my belly button. The doc said it was a hernia. I had no idea! I just thought maybe it was a fatty cyst. Now I'm worried it will get worse during the pregnancy. Anyone know if this will happen, or if it does get worse, can you have it repaired while you are pregnant? Should I go see a specialist? If so, what kind of doctor do I go to? I don't have a primary care doc. I just go straight to a specialist. Thanks.

An umbilical hernia appears as a soft bulge at the navel (umbilicus). It is caused by a weakening of the area. This type of hernia is more common in women due to pregnancy. It may get worse throughout the pregnancy with the stress of your growing belly. You should ask your doctor what they suggest. If they think you need to fix it now, they will refer you to an appropriate doctor. It is supposed to be a fairly easy outpatient surgery.

Good luck!
