No, that is a bogus rumor. But you probably can buy an old copy from eBay.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

And you're be right in NOT believing it! It won't happen, never have happened, and likely never will happen.

What likely happened is that Microsoft have announced that they will no longer SUPPORT Office 97 (i.e. provide any more patches), the same way they no longer support Windows 98. Then some pirate group who want to sound legit decided to misinterpret that as "Microsoft no longer cares about Office 97, we can copy it as much as we want!" And that'd be a BIG mistake.

Office 97 sucks, so if it's true it wouldn't be worth your time. If you can't afford the new awesome Office 2007, then get a legal free download of Open Office. It's fully compatible with MS Office, and it's free. Or, if you have a Google account, they have a web-based Docs & Spreadsheets program that is also free. To get a Google account, you have to give them your cellphone number or have a friend to invite you.

I really doubt that as well. They usually do not support their products with updates. But they do not give it away even why it is old and does not have their support anylonger like I said.

So I think that it is one of those rumours.
