Christian, Athiest, Muslim, Black, White, Asian, Homosexual, Bi Gay,Hetero, what ever. Why don't we just address people as people without forcing all these labels on ourselves and others?

Are people so afraid simply to be themselves and stand for who they are instead of the labels they or others stick on them?

Actually everybody is the same that's the point.

We all have are own unique qualities but we are all human beings as scared and precious as the next.

Because we all need to belong. Humans are social animals, and we need our "tribe".

There are a couple issues at work here. First, these are all labels of identity and are used to express to others who we are. Additionally, our brains are, to an extent, hard-wired to understand things in a categorical sense. Plants and animals; organic materials and inorganic; child and adult. Granted, none of these are black and white dichotomies, but provides a basis to understand things and it also provides context. The same statement coming from someone who is a known conservative has a very different meaning than it does if it comes from a known liberal. For example, Barney Frank saying "Family values are important and near to everyone's heart," gives one message. The same sentence coming from Pat Robertson doesn't come across the same way.

People aren't afraid to be themselves, they ARE the sum of their many facets. I for example am a son, a lover, a brother, an interpreter, a Queer man, an Atheist, a Humanist, a friend, a vegetarian gourmet....and many other things. These "labels" help me describe myself to who I am.

It's the tribal instinct.
The more civilized we get, the more labels are available.
Neanderthal Man originally had only one class of foe to defend against - nature in various forms...animals (non-Neanderthal Man, that is-big cats, mammoths, etc.) and climate-day,night,wind, rain, cold and hot weather.
No doubt as they proliferated clans developed, leading to what we call 'labels'.
People sometimes get over-sensitive about their labels and others exploit that sensitivity for personal reasons or to promote their own agendi.
Any similarity to actual current players on the 'label' scene is purely intentional.

It is a thinking short-cut. Using sets of behavior which are pre-justified. The advantages are you do not need to exercise your conscience. So this person is an atheist so you do not need to face that person as another human being but as a cohort of this kind of people for whom we withhold all respect for their point of view.

People love to *not* think and celebrate every time they do not have to. It is like bumming a ride. People need to think more, it is a national tragedy. Instead of using the gray matter over and over for each circumstance they put the needle in the groove and 'play is again sam' if it is a little bit similar.

Shame shame. If we had to face each person with the respect due each person we could not dehumanize these groups and ... who knows, maybe the world would be better.

That is mankind's way of setting up a cast system to judge people by labels, in our eyes we make what is right and what is wrong by our own ignorance and judgments.

it is a habit passed down for many generations.. to label so that everyone and everything fits in a certain category...I believe it is high time to stop it myself...but you will always have people who feel the need to express themselves..all we can do is keep trying!

People fear what they don't understand.
They are afraid of what "others" may think.

I wish I knew Fluff...how about a new one, individual. Our labels have nothing to do with who we are on a one to one level.
