I pulled old camo tape off a shotgun. It probably had been on for twenty years. On the wood, the adhesive was gummy, and cleaned off with kerosene. On the metal, though, the adhesive is hardened and it looks like I will have to scrub it off somehow. I'm currently thinking of kerosene and 0000 steel wool. Any other recommendations?

I would say to try one of these I use all 3 and they work very well, and the very best would be the de-solv-it but all 3 work very well at that job.
I just put it on let it set for a ½ hour or less and wipe it off.
I use it to remove tape adhesive from one of my bows and it was a limited wood and fiberglass limbs and did nit hurt the finish, but I have never tried it on gun stocks yet.

I wouldn't recommend anything as violently flammable as kerosene on a gun barrel. Try olive oil or mineral oil (much less flammable than kerosene, but you still have to be careful and make sure all the residue is off), or just scrub at it with super-high-grit sandpaper or (as you mention) steel wool.

That might work, but I really caution you from using kerosene to clean anything , let alone a gun. Try some paint thinner or even bug spray first. Call a gun store and ask them.

Hoppes #9 or toulene and a old tee shirt

I just degunked a surplus SK of Cosmoline. Hoppes is the stuff.

FWIW avoid using steel wool..

Once you get it down there is a spray rust inhibitor you can buy at Cabelas or a good gun store.

I have found a good glue solvent called "OOPS!" that is avaliable in Wal-Mart in the paint section. I also have found a solvent called "GOOF OFF" in the paint section at Home Depot. Both solutions are designed to clean off things like paint and glue.

Try Goo-Gone or even WD-40 before you do anything that drastic. Let it soak for a long time in this stuff and it usually works.
