What is a nice way to say "Without the co-op for food and clothing, her family would be much worse off?" I have to write a paper for community service and I can't think of a way to write that without making it sound like this lady is already "worse off". I don't want to sound rude. Thanks!

How about putting a positive spin on it? Such as, "her family is so much better off with the co-op being available to help with food and clothing."

Make a positive out of it. "Her family is better off due to the services of the local co-op".
