Altruism is about thinking of others before the self. Many religions teach it, or it can be found in the teachings, not all follow. Instead, self-cherishment tends to get in the way and gives rise to bigotry and hatred or at the very least some form of dualism.

Altruism means to sacrifice yourself for the benefit of others. This is certainly not recommended behavior in spiritual religions like Buddhism, which stress personal development. Christianity supports a perverted form of altruism. If I kill my son, or allow him to be killed, then I am somehow making a great sacrifice. This insane form of paternalism places the father's chattel ownership of his son above the son's right to life. It's difficult to accept that the murdering father has made any sacrifice at all, when it's the son who has paid with his life. Only if the son had willingly sacrificed himself for the sake of his father's faith, could you say altruism had occurred, and then the son would be the altruist. The father would still be a common murderer.

Yes they do support altruism and there are many good works done by organized religions.

Unfortunately there have also been many horrific things done in the name of these same religions.

Also a great number from various organized religions seem to totally ignore want their own good books actually say.

Even worse there are a great many who don't even know what their own good books say (because they haven't really read them) and depend on what they are told by their religious leaders.

All these groups can be found in all major religions, so it is not that one is worse than the other...they all seem to share the same fundamental problems and of course claim it is all the other religious organizations and not theirs that's at fault.

Altruism is an ecological term refering to: The way in which animals of the same species may help each other in order to help themselves, so its different from charity.

Religions promote devotee's helping each other for the purpose of serving God.

Yes, most do support altruism. Being kind and doing good works for your neighbors - other that Loving the Lord Our God with all your mind, body and soul - that's the gist of it all.
