I'm not familiar with Islam, but I know there is a common belief that Muslim women are not viewed as equals. Is this true? Why? What is the general attitude towards women in this religion?

Thanks!

i know they think they have 40 virgins in heaven as a prize for following their belief...

meantime, there are other religions who don't need that kind of bribing for followers to succumb to their God.

Sincere, good-hearted Muslim men view women as their human, intellectual, social, and spiritual equals. They do not look at themselves as being inherently superior just because they're male.

Those "superior Muslim" men, like their non-superior peers, came out of the wombs of women as helpless newborn infants and raised to their full adulthood. These men cannot respect, honor, and value women in general when they don't do the same thing for their own mothers.

Ask a Muslim woman, and she will tell how Islam has elevated her status as a female.

People, who claim that Islam does not give right to females, have the habit to misquote Islamic texts, or judge the actions of unjust Muslims around the world.

Women are equal to men in Islam for they are garments for each other. No it is not true that women aren't equal. In the Qur'an it says that women are gold and diamonds of men. Girls and women are treated like queens in Islam. Paradise lies at the feet of the mother so every muslim has to be nice and take care of their mother if they want to get into Jinnah.

Muslim men are told to respect, honor and love the women in their lives, especially their wives and mothers. Those who do not are either not practicing their religion properly or are following cultural practices instead of religious ones. The Qur'an also gives women many more rights in Islam than many people care to admit.

Women are to be treated with respect, dignity and kindness. Just like anyone else. When you hear stuff like they are beaten, abused and forced into stuff. Its all lies. People with ignorance and or an agenda want you to believe the worst because they are stupid. Allah says heaven is under your mothers feet. meaning you are to take care of your mother. On the day of judgement Allah will call you 'Audrey daughter of .......(whateverr your mothers name is) Not your father. Your mother is the most important after Allah and his prophet 3 times more than your father. Someone asked the prophet who was most important after god and prophet he replied your mother. then who they asked. He replied your mother. then who they asked. He replied your mother. then who they asked. He then replied your father.
Women are respected and cherished people. Does this sound like they are abused? Not to me. The most important people in my life are WOMEN.

When people say muslim women are abused, they are talking nonsense.

Women are equals to men. Even the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), when, asked who is the most important person to cherish, answered "Your mother." When asked who is the next most important person, answered "Your mother." When asked who was after that, then he answered "Your father."

Basically they still view them as Chattle, although some Islamic courts give them rights, even over the demands of a male relative.
