Perhaps the dog was too young? Some vets don't start dogs on HW until they're 6m.

Ivermectin (heartgard, imitation heartgard wannabes)-- Safe Selamectin (revolution) -- Safe Milbimycin (sentinel, interceptor)-- Not always safe if positive, however, if your pet was going to have a reaction, it would almost always be within a day or so of getting the drug. Therefore, if your dog didn't have a major colapse episode, it didn't hurt your dog. Moxydectin (advantage multi) I am not sure if this is safe or not. All of the products you purchase have a help number on the package. You can call that number and get help from the company if you don't believe all of us. All of the above drugs are safe for heart worm positive Cats.

Probably a disconnect between the Vet and the person at the front counter. You definitely need to get your dog on heartworm pills. Heartworm is a big problem for dogs, and it's deadly if not treated quickly.

I don't know why you vet didn't start your dog on heart worm meds after the test. Doesn't make sense really..I wanted to address sniffy there. My dogs have been heart worm meds since they have been 8 weeks old. They have different meds for the dog weight. No one should really wait until they are 6 months old. Call you vet for another test, Mine get hers tomorrow, If it is neg then start her on heart worm meds. No vet now will give you the meds with out the test. You dog really needs to be on heart worm medicine.

an over site, plus as owner, you are responisble for makeing sure that your dog has them, a reminder would have been nice though! that's like my vet telling me to have my dog tested for heartworms before getting him fixed, I agreeded that it would be good, signed a paper requesting that it be done, then it didn't get done. I go to a different vet now. Mistakes happen, but it's scary when they happen to our pets.

Why are you asking us, we're not inside the mind of the vets - they probably made a mistake!
When they asked if you'd been giving them to your dog, did you SAY 'but you didn't give me any!'
Get back on the phone to the vet to find out why you haven't got them, and if you need them!

I know a couple of people said "did you ask for them," but I agree with you, the vet should have given you some.
I know people who give their dogs the pill all year, but they only really need it during mosquito season and one month prior and one month after mosquito season.
Good luck to you!

I know with my vet she is very busy since the food recalls, This is far from over and cats and dogs are still getting sick.
So just ask for them when you go int and tht will take care of the over site.

Oh Lord. You have to buy them! The vet doesn't just give them to you unless you ask.

Sometimes, you have to suggest the idea to the vet. They forget things too, they're only human.
