I have a psycho cat that does that. I think they just like having something with your smell on it when you're gone. Even after it's washed, there is still a little bit of you on it and they can smell it.

No specific reason why some cats do this. It does tend to be cats that have had kittens. I have a Siamese who had two litters and then started stealing socks, underwear and kittens from another cat's litter. Her instinct to mother is just so strong.
It's also quite common in cats who have pseudopregnancies (false pregnancies). This is most common in unspayed cats but can occasionally happen in spayed cats. Collecting items from around the house, and even calling for them and grooming them has been seen!
One other theory is that a cat is treating the objects they're collecting as prey and are bringing it back to their "den". This is suspected when cats collect items in their beds or food bowls.

Several of my cats do this. I find the oddest things in the kitchen sometimes and I know its from the laundry room. Some of mine 'fetch' and that could have something to do with it.
I actually crochet toys for my cats that I put down there and they chose those over bringing undies up.... something to consider.
If they do this with mainly cotton items, its also a shortage of something in cat food (I forgot what its called, but it could be fiber).

My kitten does that! She steals socks, underwear, and even sponges from the kitchen sink. She just plays with them I think. I find stuff all over the place, I'm still missing one of my sponges. Yesterday she stole a sock and was just having a great time with it.

She's nesting, perhaps. Is she spayed? If so, she may enjoy the smell of the laundry detergent you are using, and would like to make a bed out of your freshly cleaned clothes.

my kitty does this too. One of my fuzzy pink socks is also missing!! THE Cat always has it and loves to sleep with it. I just ended up giving her both of the socks. She drags them all OVER the house. I wash them every week, but the kitty LOVES THEM!

Sounds to me like she is hunting. My girl is fixed and 8 mos old and does that all the time with her toys and loves to hunt under my bed for the hidden beanie babies. lol. Its fun for them as long as she is not hurting anything or herself. If you need to get her some more toys. Figure out which material she likes best and make her a toy from that. Have fun with it. She has personality! Smiles.

It's probably because she is bored or want attention. Try playing with her more, or giving her some fun new toys. If that you can't get her to stop? Close the laundry room door. :)

She has a laundry fedish. Maybe you should monitor what she is watching on TV late at night while you are in bed.

She is using her hunting instinct. Mine do the same. I praise them and tell them they are such good hunters. I finally got them "mice" that work better than clothes. I hide them and they 'hunt' them and bring them to me.
I had one very good hunter who would bring me her prizes, real mice, snakes, etc. I was proud she brought them to me. That meant she considered me part of her family and she was feeding me.
