This is a bit of a wild guess, but as much as he talked about his Resurrection many of the Apostles didn't really seem to understand it...you know, they went back to their old fishing jobs and everything. I guess seeing Jesus alive again was a little surprising for some of them, maybe they were confused or even a little scared (like when they saw Jesus walking on water and first thought He was a ghost), maybe they needed to hear Him say in a way "It's okay, it's me."

I think it was a way of greeting people. A way to tell them that it was Him. But maybe He was also able to give them that feeling of deep peace that He give us today. They would surely have know that it was something very spiritual and very holy if they had felt His peace then. I have never thought about it before, thank you for bringing it up.

Taking in consideration that Jesus spoke Hebrew (aramaican - hope i spelled right?) He told them "Shalom be with you". It used to be just a salute, but taking the word "shalom" separately, you will see that shalom means peace, prosperity, provision, health and protection. A mouthful ! He also said, earlier, "I give you My peace" (John 14:27). You realise how blessed they were, and how blessed we are ?:)

Jesus was no longer in his physical body, that is why he said to Mary Magdalene.
Do not touch me Mary he was in his spiritual
body,he knew he was going to heaven and his disciples were staying on earth to carry on his work, so he left them his peace.

so that after he left and all the confusion that he expected to come after his departure they would have some inner peace to keep them going and continue to spread the word of God and not breakdown and think it was all over.

Understandably, they were probably a bit shocked at seeing Him again, alive and well. I always thought of it like He was saying "Calm down, don't have a heartattack, it's just Me" lol
