If your not going to wear the protection then you need to condition your body to get hit. Getting hit is one way to do this. But remember it doesn't matter how well conditioned you are your nose can still break. your teeth can still fall out. You can still bite of your tongue. You can still detach your retina, and you can still break an ear drum. If you are not going to wear the protection then just don't get hit. But be prepared for the consequences if you do.

Hi there
I know just how you feel!
There are loads of products out there and there's even body armour designed for ladies. So try a few different ones until you find some that are more comfortable. Its just like buying shoes!
And those pink boxing gloves are very in too! lol
I hate just about all body armour as it restricts movement and makes me feel claustrophobic! Plus gum shields hate them too! lol
But they are there for a reason and i would much rather put up with the hassle of wearing them than popping down to the local dentists!
Which i also hate! lol
Best wishes
Idai

I hate them as well. We use them from time to time, just to keep us from knocking the doggie doo out of each other during training. Lucky for me I get into more contact sport and realism so we use it very little. I help out at point tourn. from time to time being a throw dummy for self-defense, they make us were them. My personal thoughts are if you can't take a hit you shouldn't be doing something were you may take a hit. To much Art, not enough of Martial in the Martial Arts. Just what I think, I know most disagree and thats o.k. by me. The fewer people who learn how to really fight the fewer I have to worry about if I'm ever attacked.

1- get used to it; or
2- refuse to wear it and learn to take the hits to the face.
Personally I think people generally fight more defensively in a "friendly" sparring situation if they don't have headgear as you tend to protect your head.
I'm not advocating training without it all the time, but it might improve your skills to go without it during sparring. All headgear really does IMO is protect your face from bruises. If you get hit you are still suffering from the whiplash motion from the force of the strike.

here is the thing. SARS in China. out of 20 ppl in the 300 ppl plane from Japan. only one guy decided to wear his mask and i had one but didn't wear it. H1N1 . the authorities most likely tell you to wear it, other wise its not really a big deal. it all depends on your own preference

The problem may be the type of head guard you are using. Take a look at other types that offer protection but do not obstruct your vision:

It sounds like your training "full contact" your options are:
Wear the safety equipment required. or
Take up a "Non" or "Semi contact" Martial art.
Belive me the safety gear can prevent serious injuries.
As for the inconveniance, in the long run you will get used to it, just focus on your art.
