They do work - but as people have said it's easier if you really fly a lot. I fly at least once a week for business and usually more, so I get more than a hundred thousand miles a year, and it's not difficult for me to get upgraded to first class or cash in miles for a free trip. But, however, it can't really hurt to get them either. Even before I started flying so much for business and I only flew a couple times a year for vacations I still collected miles and was able to use them. (Of course, airlines - since the industry was losing money for so long - have also made using miles more restrictive). But it cant' really hurt to collect them.

Also, as someone mentioned, it's better to stick with one airline or alliance. A note on that - most major airlines are part of one of the three alliances (SkyTeam, OneWorld, and Star Alliance are the three worldwide alliances). So if you get miles on one airline then you can redeem the miles in another airline in the same alliance. For example, I have miles on USAirways (part of Star Alliance), because I fly them a lot. But I also occasionally fly Air Canada, also part of Star Alliance, and get miles on USAirways. I also have miles on American Airlines (OneWorld) and Continental Airlines (SkyTeam). So basically you only need miles on one airline in each alliance.

They do work. I have used them for tickets on a couple of occasions. One recommendation though is to book your flight as far ahead of time as possible because the airlines have only a certain number of seats designated for Frequent Flyer Miles. Usually, you can book the trip up to a year in advance.

They work for me! I stack up FF Miles on business trips and then use the miles for personal travel later. Also hotel points.

But that's not the best benefit! The best benefit is getting to premiere level and being able to not only zip through security but to also get complementary upgrades to first class. You think we actually paid full price to sit there? No way!
