Honestly: I don't know how prayer helps, but I know it does. Sometimes, the belief of heaven w/ no suffering, diseases, crying, sorrow helps. However, it's not what I immediately think of when stupid stuff happens in life. It's something, I'll have to think about.
Thanks for the respectful & thoughtful question.
God bless

I don't believe in heaven (or hell), so even though I am religious, that is not the comfort that I derive from my beliefs.
Death is difficult, and it hurts those left behind, but it is part of the natural cycle of life. In dealing with grief after the death of a loved one, I found this that sums it up nicely for me:
"Energy does not die - I have only changed form. I will always be with you."
With regards to dealing with crisis or trauma, I try to look at "what I can learn from this?" because I believe that things are life lessons, not punishments or things that happen "because God is mad at me."

We need to have some knowledge of his laws and how transgressing them brings suffering and loss.
I'm comforted in knowing that we reap what we sow whether we sow good or evil. Every person, regardless of race, creed or whatever will receive exactly and precisely to the jot and tittle what he deserves.
This is a great comfort that God's laws are he rains on the just and the unjust.
It isn't just "thoughts of God" that make it easier, but the evidential knowledge that we grow what we plant.
It may show up in a skipped generation, or tomorrow, but the laws of God are what comforts me.
His laws can be depended on, which tells me about HIS thoughts. So thoughts of him is a comfort knowing that he, whom I think of made the laws which treat each and everyone of us the same.
Worship anothe god and suffer. Worship Him and be blessed. This is also comfort.
What a God!!!

In times, of crisis, I never feel alone. I feel comfort and a special peace. I become stronger going through the crisis with God helping me.As a matter of fact, it is the crisis times that God has shown himself to be the most real to me..There is a point when weak human nature can't take anymore (no matter who the person is) and the faith of God himself takes over.....Thanks for the fair question.

Personally, I believe in God as a loving Father & it is a comfort to be able to pray & give Him charge of whatever is grieving me. When my dad passed, I felt God's presence & love carrying me through all of the events & decisions. When my husband passed, I experienced the same comfort & strength, almost as if God had pulled me into His lap & held me. Sometimes in moments of grief & weeping, just saying "Jesus" is a prayer & is comforting. I was diagnosed with cancer last year & had a hysterectomy, again I felt God's presence in response to prayer & faith. My family & friends rallied around me each time also & knowing that others were praying & supporting me helped too. There were people from 6 or 7 churches praying for me. PS--I'm now cancer free.

I feel God's presence even in the midst of tragedy or turmoil. He brings a peace that no other can offer. My refuge in the time of storm. See it is not the thought of God that comforts me it is the knowing God. I live in today and know that my future is secure so I don't need to spend all my time worrying about the "after life". I live today and love today. Although, my life has had times of sorrows in it and times that the road was extra long and difficult. .I never walked through one moment of it alone. Wow, when I look back at my life and all I have been through I am amazed. The Lord is my strength and my shelter. Thanks for asking. :)

Not exactly.
The existence of a Creator makes me see that everything in life is a test of faith and strengh. So the bad times, or painful moments that come up without the influence of my own behaviours, are actually stepping stones, by which I can get closer to the Source. Theyre challenges, and when I sit in patience and trust God that everything will be ok, I will take a step up closer to Him. The end result? one hopes that it is: Nirvana

Not so much the thought of Heaven during times of crisis, but the knowledge that one who loves me is in control. I know difficult times will come my way, but with the faith that God is in charge, and will give me nothing too much to handle, I find comfort. Its about letting your troubles rest in the arms of the Lord. No burden is too heavy for him to bear.
