It is a red rash only on her ring finger. The skin looks a little flakey too. It gets better after she takes it off and basically disappears. We sent it off to be professionally cleaned, buffed, etc., hoping that maybe it was just something on the ring that could be cleaned off. This is the only ring she wears. Will switching to a white gold ring alleviate the rash/irritation or will she have to go without any ring?

Allergies can arise after prolonged exposure to an allergen. Take her to the doc to see if she is now allergic to platinum, & take the ring to a jewler to see if it has been compromised. If she is now allgeric, then she might/probbaly need(s) a new ring.

She may have become allergic to the ring. go see a dermatologist they can figure out what the problem is and how to treat it. But do not take another step until she has a dermatologist check her hand out. It mite be some thing new she is eating causing a reaction, new cleaner being used. Normally a platinum ring is a safe investment and white gold could have the same problem: you need to fine out what is the basic cause of the problem, then go from there!

Your wife's finger may become irritated with any ring on it. Allergies to anything can develop at any time in one's life. I have an Aunt who owns a great jewelry store, and is completely allergic to gold and platinum. She wears the platinum by having something put onto the ring, before she wears her platinum rings. I know that, once, at least, she used plain old clear fingernail polish.

If it's hurting her, you should take it off. White gild may work, but then again it may not. Ask (if possible) a dermatoligist for more help. If you can't and its the only ring she'll wear, try putting a little vasiline on the rash (just a little or it will slide off!) to help. But getting a new ring would be the best choice for me.

Yes...she needs a new ring!! Sometimes it takes a while for an allergy to come out. I had worn Platinum for 6 years when I developed and allergy to it. Now it seems I am allergic to many precious metals. :(

Good Luck

Has she switched dish detergent, lotion, etc.? I can only use Ivory because my finger gets red and flaky under my ring if I use anything else. Just a thought.

it's probably just the soap getting under the ring when she washes, best to take it off when washing and dry hands properly see how that works.
