Great question. Some readers are just about there but here is the answer based upon my Scriptural studies. The spirit is both the life force, the breath, and the mind of man. The spirit dies with the body or as Scripture puts it "returns to God". The Soul is that which may die a second death if one has not come to God by way of the Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus taught this clearly in Matthew. The soul will be reunited with a new spiritual body according to St Paul in the resurrection.

Buddhism, interprets the soul as being what is really the spirit.
Buddhism does not believe that we have a soul (that is a spirit).
Buddhism's definition of the soul[spirit] is Self.
In Buddhism, it is the Mind-stream, that continues on, and not the soul, that is the spirit.
*There are many Buddhists on Y & A, who have been practicing Buddhism much, much longer than myself, that can better explain this aspect of Buddhism better for you. OR go to http://www.buddhanet.net/
and type in "soul" or "anatta" in the right hand corner [search Buddhanet] to do an extensive search. Hope this helps some.

Christianity believes that a person is a spirit being, who possess a soul = [mind, will and emotions], and lives in a physical body. 1Thess. 5:23. The spirit of a person is saved by grace, through faith And one must work out the salvation of their soul {mind, will and emotions) w/fear and trembling [Jesus' brother James said, in his book) - the salvation of the soul [mind, will and emotions] takes place through renewing & transforming one's Mind -{Rom. 12:2) *Prior religion: Christianity, with no regrets.
-Hope this helps, some also.

You will have to receive answers from the other religions and philosophy's of life as to how they define the spirit and soul.

In Scripture spirit and soul usually are used interchangeably. The soul always refers to the immortal part of our being. The Bible states that being absent from the body, such as in death, makes us present with the Lord and that part that is present with the Lord is our soul.

In Christ

The soul is your mind, and reasoning and feelings, like love. Spirit is what keeps the body alive, is the life-force. This is what I gathered from my studies, anyway. Peace. Live long and prosper.

soul i think is the thing spiritual people talk about, and religions talk about, while the spirit i think is more often used as a figure of speech-- like, the essence of something, or to say someone has a lot of energy. but really, i think they're the same thing.

Soul is something individual.

Spirit is something we share.

It's communal, worldwide, 'universal'.

It's 'not ours'.

It's animation, life, all that's best.

It's probably 'God'. :-)

We're just the containers of it.
