I have suffered through this through both of my nursing relationships. If there is no shooting pains and your baby's mouth isn't affected, i would rule out thrush. I have eczema on my nipples (and else where) The doctor gave me a steoid cream, but the main thing i had to do was give them time to dry out between feedings/pumpings. Staying wet caused more irritation.
Talk with an IBCLC and your doctor. Be sure your doctor does a culture to rule out thrush and bacterias.

They are getting pretty dry. After your done pumping use the Bag Balm ointment they sell at the drug store.
It's pretty useful and great as a lip gloss.
Check with your doctor first though if it is an infection. It could be thrush.

I doubt it is if you are breast feeding. Babies usually get thrush in their mouths from formula and/or breastfeeding and tends to sit in their mouth for long periods of time causing thrush. Yeast likes to grow in moist, warm places. Their mouths are not rinsed out like you and I from swallow or brushing teeth. If a baby has thrush and you are breasfeeding the chances are quiet high. Your baby would require to be treated with Nilstatin (spelling?) which is a sweet, bright yellow liquid that will clear the thrush from your babies mouth (They have to swallow it too and just wipe their mouth with it)and then you have to be treated too. I used monostat external cream for my nipples which is the same cream you would treat yeast infection of the vaginal BUT only use the EXTERNAL cream not the ovule inserts. I know all this because it happened to me. I had to stop breast feeding and never went back. I started feeding my daughter formual instead. If you trying to keep breast feeding, you run the risk of passing it back and forth. I also use an asthma spray with a steroid which, even if I rinse my mouth, I still get thrush in my mouth and have to use Nilstatin often. I even gave myself a thrush infection on a cut by sucking it, as most people do if you cut yourself, and infected my cut with thrush. I just used monostat for that too and it diappeared. The skin with get itchy, dry and crack. You will have to go to the doctor regardless for a treatment for your baby and get a prescription of Nilstatin. Good luck.

It could be anything. It could be an allergic reaction to something, it could be bacterial, and of course it could be thrush.
I suppose pumping could cause irritation and I guess that may itch? You could try protecting your nipples more in between pumping.
