It's hard to have relationships with people if both people are pursuing two different goals. Christians are trying to live their lives altruistically for God whereas atheists live their lives selfishly for themselves. Chaos tends to happen when a house tries to move in two directions. Then one person has to start compromising one's values and normally it's the Christian who slowly erodes into a non-believer.

You are on the right track... God doesn't want Christian believers to marry non-Christians for many reasons.

Since raising children is to be a mutual event with both parents the duty of raising the children for Christ would be solely on the Christian believer's shoulders.

God also wants a strong united marriage. Like-mindedness in beliefs is a HUGE area.

When my husband and I are sitting around in the evening, relaxing, our beliefs often surface in our discussion. We discuss the news and our Christian beliefs always surface with the conversation.

Marriage is a union of two separate people and it is a call to become one. One in purpose. One in thought. One in action. One before God.

2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?

The above scripture teaches that any other worship of God, except Christianity, is idolatry. There is no harmony between Christianity and any other belief. They are opposites.

Christianity teaches that Jesus was God in the flesh and that He is the only way to heaven. That is exculsive of all other beliefs and there will never be any harmony.

Marriage is tough enough. Don't throw a mix of beliefs into it.

If a person claims that they are a strong Christian and they are really thinking about marrying a non-Christian, I would question if they really know what the Bible teaches...or if they are really Christians.

I can't think of one non-person person I know that I am like minded with. Sure, I get along with non-Christians. I can get along with them on the surface...but to dive deep into a conversation with a non-Christian is impossible. I must watch my words because non-Christians frequently tell me they are seeking spiritual fulfillment in odd ways. Ways that are far, far, from the truth. I must bite my tongue.

So, if a person claims to be a real Christian and then also have a strong united relationship with a non-Christian, I must question what are they united over. It must not really be a deep relationship.

Dear sho,

God tells us (christians) not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. This means that we are to seek a spouse who is redeemed. But none of us can see into another persons soul, so there would be times when a believer would marry someone who was not saved, but thought they were.

Once a person is married, they are to be with that spouse until death (no divorces). But in the meantime, the saved spouse was to love and pray for the unsaved spouse. Remember God saves in His own time! It may be that the unsaved spouse will become saved years later or maybe never at all. In all trials, the true believer is to obey the Lord and rely on Him to get us through difficult situations.

"If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear."

The Bible says not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

The yoke on an oxen is the perfect example. The believer is going in one direction with the unbelieving spouse is trying to move in a different direction. How could this ever be a good situation for a marriage or a family?

Well such marriages would never work out. Let's imagine an atheist father with a "good" christian mother.

Their child has been disobedient, so the mother ties him up and places him against the wall. She then grabs a bag full of stones, and gets ready to throw the first one at her own 5 year old son. The father sees this and stops her.

Father: What the HELL ARE YOU DOING?
Mother: I'm stoning him to death, what's it look like?
Father: Why the **** would you do that?
Mother: He was disobedient!
Father: That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!
Mother: God commands it, it's in the scriptures. He speaks back and I kill him. It's in the bible 5 times even. It's a big deal.
Father: You can not be serious!
Mother: God is above this family, Job and Abraham were ok with their family dying.
Father: He's our son! You're completely insane to murder our own son for this stupidity!
Mother: It's god's will. (throws first stone)
Father (Thinking quickly): Wait, but I thought Jesus over-rode the OT laws!
Mother: He really didn't, he said he came to preserve them all.
Father: Even this nonsense??
Mother: Yes, in Mark 7:9-10 he criticizes his followers for not following OT law and murdering their children. He does the same thing again in Mathew.
Father: You have to stop this, your stupid book is wrong!
Mother: (throws rock and hits father with it, taking him out) Sorry honey, I have to kill you too now. Deuteronomy 13:7-11

THAT is why it's forbidden. Christians can not live peacefully with moral people.

For one there is NO Christian God, only Jesus Christ God Almighty and He is Jewish. On to your second question I married an atheist. He had been an atheist for the majority of his life, we will be celebrating our 23rd year together in August. Seven years ago, my husband found God on his own and is now a Christian.

Seeing as most of the old testament consisted of the israelites falling away from god, then coming back to him over and over again, he didn't have much reason to have any faith in them.
