I think it is the jackman. If he screws up, the tire changers are affected and that slows down the whole pit stop.

The most important person on pit road is without question, the crew chief. He is the one that makes all the calls, when to pit, when to stay out, how many tires, which side,. etc. He also has to know every inch of the track. He will walk the track with the driver, and evaluate bumps, dips, and over all condition of the track at each and every turn. Think of him as the head coach of a football team. He can hire and fire anyone in the pits, and he also takes a lot of heat when he makes a bad call in pit strategy. With that said, the driver depends on his crew chief more than you think. After all, who do they interview during the race, the guy holding the catch can, or the crew chief?

I'd say it's the driver. Each member of a pit crew has a couple of different things to concentrate on but the driver has to do a bunch of things. First he has to make sure he sets himself up to make it onto pit row by letting the other drivers know his intentions (by waving an arm and getting to the inside lane). Next he has to make sure to get down to the speed limit so that he doesn't get a pass through penalty. As he is coming towards his pit stall he has to make sure he can get in and out quickly and not hit another car or crew member from a neighboring pit box. As he enters he has to make sure he stops within the box and that he can also get out good if the car in front pits. A driver also has to make sure they don't pit too close to the wall so the jack can get under the car and the handle has room to come down. When they leave it's important to bring up your RPMs so you don't stall when they drop the jack. You don't, however, want to over rev the engine as that can lead to transmission problems. Again, they need to make sure they don't hit anything or speed when exiting. Hopefully the driver gave the crew chief chief good information on the handling of the car (another important responsibility of the driver). It is extremely important for the driver to effectively handle ALL of those tasks or what the rest of the crew does won't matter.

No one job is more important. If anyone of them does not do their job the whole stop could be a failure.
The crew chief has to oversee this,so failure of the stop ultimately would be on his lap.So in one sense and probably the most important sense the crew chief would be the most important person since he oversees the full crew, over the wall and behind the wall.

The most common problem is the car driving off without all the lug nuts being tightened. The driver leaves when the jack lets the car down so I'd say the jack man.

the crew chief. he may not be doing any physical labor like the rest other than moving a pen or pencil acrossed paper but all the changes on the tires wedge or track bar will be worthless if he doesnt have the ability to have luck and skill on his/her side since its his final call what happens to the adjustments of the car.
