Um, Jesus didn't quote anything from the New Testament. It hadn't been written yet.

Favorite quote BY Jesus: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." - Isaiah 61 via Luke 4

Favorite quote FROM Jesus: "Whatsoever you do to the least of my. brothers and sisters you do to me." Matthew 25:40 "

Close runner-up: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." -Matthew 7:21

The Beatitudes from Matthew 5:3-12
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
2. Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted.
3. Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the land.
4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
6. Blessed are the pure of heart for they will see God.
7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
8. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

There is a 9th beatitude in the gospel of Mark. It reads: "Blessed are you when they insult you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is great in heaven...."

I cannot tell you the countless times this passage has touched my life. I can relate to every verse. I was once poor in spirit as an 18 year old in an abusive marriage. I have also faced times of mourning. I have been meek and I have known feelings of spiritual starvation as I sought out His truths. I have also faced many times of wanting to find others who would treat me more righteously instead of judgmentally or abusively. I have mercy because forgiven things that most people, even many Christians would expect me to harbor bitterness for. Though I am not perfect, I try to have a pure heart. I am definitely a peacemaker and I have been mistreated for being a Christian.

This passage reassures me that in spite of what trials and tribulations I go through on this earth, as long as I try to remain in close fellowship with the Lord, I am guaranteed His blessings.

And I'm paraphrasing here:

Jesus: Dude, I'm the Word.
Peter: Word?
Jesus: Word *throws the devil horns*

Seriously though:

John 8:32 "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Too bad he was only talking to the Jews. Better luck next time!

"Forgive them for they know not what they do" is my favorite. It really puts Christians in a whole new light when it comes to trying to force their religion on the rest of the world. If he had meant to exclude his followers he would have said, "forgive everyone but my followers, for they know not what they do".

I often wish I could put my favorite bumper sticker on my car without good Christians slashing my tires. It reads, "Jesus, save me from your followers."

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world gives, do I give. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

"Blessed are the cheese-makers." And yes, I do know that he is referring to the makers of all dairy products.

"Truly, truly, I say to you there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous persons who need no repentance."
