or at least made to suffer while dying?
I've seen many here offer such suggestions when confronted with the atrocities committed by people.
Do you agree?
Would that make their punishment more just?

Nothing can undo what has been done.

Torturing a helpless being would turn us into The Torturers of Helpless Beings. No matter what someone else may do, we are not granted permission to become like them.

It may very well be that a murderer has already experienced such horrors upon him or herself, and that certainly could lead him or her to murder someone. We are supposed to remain untouched by the world, by it's money, glamour, and cruelty.

C/P my answer from a similar thread...

I believe that those who murder should be put to death, I do not agree that they should suffer unnecessarily in the process.

But then I have a different view of Justice versus Revenge than most people I've talked to.

If someone maliciously and intentionally takes the life of another, they forfeit their own. To me, that is Justice, and the loss of their life is the consequence of their action.

To torture them in the process is simply Revenge, and the primary purpose is to make others "feel better"... but to me, those who delight in torture in the name of Revenge become no better than the murderers themselves.

Yes, it's a completely human and natural reaction to want to "get some of your own back". But the kind of energy that surrounds and feeds off of thoughts, ideas, and actions of Revenge is destructive and serves no positive purpose.

Just my $0.02.

Only if you are a barbarian and feel that human suffering should beget human suffering. Take the high ground and show yourself to be superior and not controlled by the base nature of hatred.

No. That's not justice, it's revenge. The "eye for an eye" mentality will never solve anything. A revenge philosophy inevitably leads to an endless cycle of violence. It is important to send a message to society that striking back at your enemy purely for revenge will always make matters worse.

I believe a civilized society should not employ torture as punishment, even for heinous crimes, for, as warrior pointed out so perfectly, torture only manages to "instill malice in the torturer."

I actually don't see the point. I wouldn't even see the point of torturing Hitler. That wouldn't make all those jews that he killed less dead. I am not however against the death penalty. I think it's just best to "put them to sleep" so they can't hurt anyone else.

I've seen liberals make posts in the past proclaiming that such punishments are deserved for U.S. troops in Iraq.

No, they shouldn't. However, murderers (state terrorists, that is, US Army or CIA operatives) do torture, but they don't get their hands dirty dealing with fellow torturers and murderers but with innocent civilians and freedom fighters.

No.
Not all people, or even most people, but many people can be helped.
Killing another person doesn't solve the problem.
Prison is fine for me, minus the cable tv and crap like that.
