Monotheism is the belief in one god or deity. Monism is the belief (and if I understand you correctly) in one good or end or goal in life.
Monism is from philosophy; Aristotle was a monist. Monotheism is from religion; Judaism is monotheism.

In a religious context, they are basically the same thing. The only problem is in Christianity, which is not a monotheistic religion, because of the equality of God and Satan, you have a dualistic system. That is not new to Christianity. The movement that set the ground work for Christianity is Zoroasterianism which preached dualism, the eternal battle between good and evil. God has neither the strength nor the power to do away with Satan, he needs him to exist. Compare that to a simplier statement, a preacher needs sin in the world, otherwise he would not have a job.

Monism implies that all the gods are unified by their shared divine essence while monotheism is the belief in the one true God.
