I have a friend who is clinically depressed. She is also one of the most negative persons I've ever met, seeing the dark side of almost everything and everyone. She also has an anger issue that really surprises me. Is all of this part of the symptomology of depression or are other issues going on here?

There is a high in her life, then back to her normal routine. Then over time she develops a very pessimistic attitude towards everyone and alienates her closest friends. The highs do not last too long.

Both excellent answers. I'm going to put it to a vote. Thank you to you both for taking the time to answer my question. It is sad for me when a friend since childhood changes so drastically. Thank you again.

Is this constant behavior (the negativity, anger, pessimism and depression) or does it "swing" back and forth between the depression and the anger?

If it's constant, then it's probably just acute depression.

If it swings, it may be bipolar disorder.

Hopefully, she has been diagnosed and is on medication to help with the depression.

she could have a minor form of bi-polar. But depression can cause irritability so some of her anger could stem from that.

Also itt is possible that she could have a personality disorder. Most people with personality disorders effect other people, but have few problems dealing with it themselves. Its mostly others who pressure them to get counseling. Where as mood disorders such as depression are noticed and felt by the person themselves. So if all this is happening and its mostly effecting those around her, but not her specifically, it could be a sign of a personality disorder.
