The absolute cheapest you will pay for a passport if you never had one before is $97.00. There is absolutely no way to get around the big cost (renewals are cheaper).

You can print out the US passport forms online and search for a local servicing center. You need to have two photos (they take it at many passport servicing centers or get it at a photo development store like Wolf's Camera). It will cost around $97.00 and take approximately 8-10 weeks to arrive at your home. To expedite the request you can also pay an extra $60.00.

If you like, you can also go to many US Postal Centers to also complete the paperwork (go to www.usps.com/locator to find the nearest post office that handles passport applications.
Currently passports are taking about 10 weeks for the Passport Agency to process.

I don't know of any way of getting a discount on passport. You can apply through passport agency directly or post office but price is the same.

the only way I know of to get a passport in the USA is through the postal service.
