"God" doesn't punish anyone. We live within a structure of cause and effect laws, exercising our free will. It's called karma. We "punish" ourselves, but not in the superficial, barbaric sense of the word.
Karma brings learning experiences which are ultimately beneficial to your spirit, if you accept it.
Your friend only hurt himself by letting himself down. He needs to forgive himself and learn from past mistakes.

Finish the pack. If you really want to quit smoking, then you must do it yourself for your own reasons. God does not exist so you won't be punished. Using the Mavericks' win as a sign is disingenuous since one of the teams would have won, the Mavericks statistically had about a 50% chance of winning which is hardly an outcome that could be attributed to a deity. If you want reassurance, tonight, pray for permission to finish the pack. Say, "If you don't want me to finish this pack of cigarettes, make the sky green with purple stripes tomorrow." I'm pretty sure you'll get your permission then.

It depends on how one looks at the promise. If, in this case, one takes the position that every time the individual involved is faced with the immediate availability of alcohol he or she usually refrains, but on occassion slips....should he or she not be rewarded for resisting all those other opportunities!?
Life is too long, too big and too complex to take as a whole, single unit....nor does God, apparently, expect us to do so. While God does expect us to keep our word when vows are made, He takes each opportunity as an individual test and weighs the results accordingly. That is the expression of God's mercy.

these kind of promises are not really biblical,my friend. Actually God knows that person cannot do it by himself. God wants that person to ask for His help..He`s full of loving kindness for that person. He wont punish him, because He punished Jesus for all mistakes and sins 2000 years ago.
"Psa 36:7 How precious is Your loving-kindness, O God! And the sons of men take refuge under the shadow of Your wing. "
Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins and their lawlessness I will remember no more."
The more condemn you feel, the deeper you would go into sin.
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest (Jesus) who cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted just as we are, yet without sin. !! :)

God is willing to forgive, but He also allows us to bear the consequences of our wrong behavior, so that we will learn from it.
Actually, we can't keep promises in our own strength, but once you have become a child of God, you can always ask Him for help to be able to resist temptation.
1. Cor. 10:13 "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it."

I think God knows we're all too easily tempted.... Will he smite this person for drinking beers after the promise? Not likely. Will he lead this person to guilt? Possibly. Will this person bring about their own punishment? If they don't strive harder to follow their own path of spiritual evolution, there's a good chance.
A more important question for you to ask.... What will God teach you about being judgemental about another person for their faults?

Do not worry, I didn't get the memo about your friend's promise, so I cannot be angry about it. I am not an easily angered god, but it does peeve me when someone tells me they'll do something and then they don't do it. That damned Set of the Desert still owes me 200 cattle offerings, what a prick.

Nope. Religious promises are to be made, not kept. Ask Jesus why he's taking his time coming back and remind him that he told his followers he'd be back BEFORE they all died.
Anyway, god doesn't punish you for anything, especially if you don't believe in him.

His promise to God could have been repentance. If we repent, but then go back and sin again, we do not receive the forgiveness for it the first time until we fully repent. Whatever happens is between he and God, however, so you don't need to worry about it.

Please read the link below. Having two beers may not be a sin but deliberately getting drunk would be a sin. In your circumstance I dont think it would be a sin to have 2 beers but if you can it would be better not to have any. If the person your describing is an alcoholic then he should abstain.
