That would be tacky. People should feel free to give you whatever they want. You should accept it and thank them. They are truly under NO OBLIGATION to get you anything.

You can suggest that you'd like gift cards but I would add a few other things to the registry. Some people have a limited income to work with and may not want to get a low balance gift card. The thing about wedding gifts: not only do you want to think about what you want but you need to think about your guests. Have things for all ranges of budgets on your regisrty.

You can, but it tends to be tacky. You can also ask for cash only but that tends to be tackier.
A wedding gift is something that is not required, but given to the bride and groom out of the generosity of the giver. It in many instances is something that is selected with care so that x many years from now the bride can look at something and say "Oh this is the crystal pitcher the Suzie Q gave us for our wedding." A registry is bad enough because that takes a lot of the leeway out of what might plan to give otherwise.
When I give a wedding present I don't pay any attention to the registry and give them something I would like them to have several years from now and remember who gave it to them.
I guess with the gift cards you can look in a drawer sometime and say "Oh look, Jenny gave us a gift card. I wonder what we got with it? Oh, I think it was the toilet brush and holder that we threw away a couple of years after we got it."

Asking for "cash" or "money" or "gift cards" is inappropriate.
First of all, it is doubtful that a bridal gift registry will let you do that because they are in the "wedding gift business." If all you want are gift cards then there is no use "registering" for wedding gifts at any website or store. Also, many of your wedding guests may not like the idea of giving you a gift card, they would prefer giving you "a wrapped gift" of your choice or their choice. Give your guests several options, you can always return what you do not want or like. Answered by: A Certified wedding specialist / a Professional bridal consultant / a Wedding ceremony officiant

If you want gift cards, you obviously want STUFF. Put the stuff on your registry, along with the gift card option.

You can specify that you would *prefer* gifts cards to select stores, but you can't insist on what people bring. A registry is a wish list, a preference... not a ransom demand. So register just for gift cards to your favorite stores, and thank people graciously if they decide to bring something else.

its tacky and rude to ask for gift cards only. Its like standing in your receiving line charging admittance to your wedding. People you invite to your wedding are not obligated to give you a gift. Be greatful that you are getting anything.

t-a-c-k-y. You can't ASK for anything. You can make it known that you are registered at 'x' and 'y' but you can't ask for anything. THat's the point of the wedding registry, so that people can get you something that you'll like. Wedding registries are new things, used to be people just bought you a present that they liked as a congratulations gift.

You can add gift cards on your registery -- however, you should give folks an option for gifts as well -- those things that you really want to have.
