Jesus was using figurative language when he spokes these words. He used HYPERBOLE. Jesus enjoyed using hyperbole - you can see it throughout the gospel. Its sometimes a great way of emphasizing a point (ex. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!)
Jesus wanted to show us how important is was for us to deal with sin. Sin is not some little thing - its pure evil in the sight of the Holy God and it must be dealt with.
If it takes extreme measures to deal with sin, than we must do it. Jesus is not, however, suggesting self-mutilation (once again, its hyperbole). He is suggesting that you take desperate means to deal with a desperate problem. Paul suggests the same when he says we should "flee from immortality."
For example, if you cannot stop looking at pornography, that doesn't mean you should gouge out your eyes. But why don't you try this first - keep your door open at all times. Or maybe put your computer in the family room. Or get rid of your computer and just use the school's! The point is, it takes aggressive measures to get rid of something so dreadful.

What Jesus was saying was to get rid of the things that cause you to sin. If hanging around certain friends tempts you beyond your ability to resist drugs, change friends. If you can't handle the temptation of porn on the internet, get rid of the internet, or maybe get a filter. He mentioned the extreme because He was stressing the fact that nothing on this earth is more valuable than our relationship with God and the plans that He has for us, now and in the here after.
Many times before Jesus gave these kinds of words of wisdom He would also say,' For him who has ears let him hear," meaning that anyone that desires to hear God should listen up. Others won't understand at all. You need to have spiritual ears, so to speak, because the meanings were deeper than face value.

It's a good thing you're not into Christianity, you'd be a limbless torso. When and if you ever decide to get into Christianity you will hopefully discover that most things in the Bible are referring to spiritual meanings.
But it's okay, You are not the first person to think on that line of thought, nor will you be the last. What that is referring to is a renewing of your mind. You see the dead body doesn't move by itself, and by itself is sinless. It is the thinking that controls the body parts.
However, I do recall some guy,I think in NewYork that cut his hand off because he was taking that in the carnal sense. Take care and may GOD bless you spiritually.

Gee. You sound like a Eunuch in a Harem. Has a good idea of how it works but can't effectuate it himself. Funny. The Saducees use to call Pharisees " Bleeding Pharisees " from smacking into a lot of stonemasonry in order not to do just that. Hm. Sounds old, that tenet. You're not the devil, are you? If so ... the meter's runnin', huh??!!

you are clearly one of those people who take a verse and try to contort them. read at least three versus before and after. you only want to make a point. this is an ill way of trying to do so. I think in debate class they said people only do this when there wrong or desperate. and can't find any true proof of why they might be right

Because it is not a commandment to do so, it's just a suggestion. I believe the verse says "It is better to gouge out your eyes than etc..." not "It is a commandment from God that you must gouge out your eyes"

Matthew 5:29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
God didn't mean for us to literally mutilate ourselves, no one would be left whole. But it points to the seriousness of sinning habitually. He is saying, that it would be better to remove the sinning part of our body rather than to go to hell, because it would be a small sacrifice compared to hell.

Christians sin too. and yes, we should not lust upon any individual. thank goodness, we can go to God in prayer to help us with any problem. Prayer works. With his help we can overcome any sin...
