I've done both.

The first real relationship I had was terrible. She was at least a foot taller than me, and a lot bigger. She was nice at first, but as the relationship continued she was overbearing and mean. She turned out to be a real ogre. I had changed everything about myself to be with her, even to the point of nearly severing family ties. I knew it needed to end - but I was too scared. So, I drug it out for another year and a half until she finally broke up with me.

The next girl I dated just wasn't my type. I had grown a little bit since the last gf, and knew what I was looking for. Once I decided to end it, I ended that evening.

So to answer your question, I guess it depends on the guy, and/or the circumstance.

Guys are not scared to end a relationship, but why be the bad guy if you don't have too? It's easy to get a girl to break-up with you, that way you can walk away clean.

Of course you can always say "I still want to be friends", we learned that one from women.

i dragged it out with a x back in the day after dating for 2 years when i finally tried everything she still wouldnt break up then i told her, however still didnt work i didnt end up falling til 5 years after being with her and her forcing herself to be with me funny thing is the 7 year itch came and she cheated/dumped me so my advice just break up and avoid the hassle of being broken hearted

experience acquired out in the real world suggests most people (male and female) won't let go of a relationship, until they have something to fill the gap. they see change as a loss of control or power. and the thought of starting new and fresh is the basis of the fear you mentioned.

Guys will generally drag the relationship on for as long as possible to get as much sexual favours as they can.

Ok I told a few girl this and it work when I broke up with them.

" ok this is not working. I think we should not see other. I make the rules when I break up with a person I don't speak to her, see her, call her, email her I just want to have nothing to do with that person. it's nothing personal but I don't want to be that "FRIEND" cause I'm not that kind of person. I want to move on and get on with my life. OK?"

try it. it what we called a "clean break"

It's hard to break up for guys.
Has to do with their self image.
They can't bare to have left a negative image on another person.
It will just destroy him inside.
