He thinks that all young people (including those in their 20s) are just lazy and punks. Should I just ignore him or what would be the best thing to do/say next time he says a rude comment about me or others?

To clarify, he is not a relative. He is in a college class of mine. He loudly says rude things so the whole class can hear, either about me directly (responding to something I said...even though I would not say rude things in the first place), or just our class in general. (He is the oldest).

That depends on many things. If he doesn't say them directly to you, I'd ignore him. He probably complains about a lot of things and no one takes him seriously. If he does say it to you just say "don't you think that's a rude thing to say to me? Does that excuse you for poor manners?" He'll probably be so shocked that someone called him out he'll just walk away.

Surprising that the instructor doesn't say something to him. I'm in that geezer demographic and know some lazy punks in their 20s and some who are shining examples of dignity and class. It takes all kinds. Just ignore him and use his behaviour as an example of the meaness of sweeping generalizations. Not all rednecks are condescending and rude, just another sweeping generalization...touche.

If I were in class with him, I'd show him just how rude a little punk like me could be. Snap back at him next time and put the geezer in his place.

One question, though: Why does your professor let him go on like that?

Hes right us young people are lazy. You should let him believe what he wants if hes older than 45. Hes been around longer if people back in his day where less lazy than they are today his views are probably correct from his point of view You not having been alive back in his day can't comment on the laziness of people from then that and people from then are old now so they would seem lazy. The Old people that have seen me work have never called me lazy so what are you doing that makes you seem lazy to him? I mean if some one seems lazy to me and they complain about having to do something if I wasn't lazy I'd tell them about themselves

The hardest thing to open is a closed mind. You can't change him, only how you respond.
Unless you yourself are a lazy punk, then stand up for yourself. Tell him that although his generalizations may be applicable to many of your generation, they do not apply to you and that the generalization is also applicable to many of his generation and stature.
Make sure you yourself prove him wrong by your actions.

He won't get it, won't listen, and won't care, but you've said your peace.
After that forget him.

Depends on what the situation is. If he's a family member, you already know you can't talk him out of his perceptions. And likely every member of the family knows how close-minded he is. So just let it roll off your back.
If you're dealing with a workplace situation, you don't have to accept that. If he makes a direct statement, challenge it.

I would not waste your time trying to reprogram someone with these views. Being open minded is something that cannot be taught through word of mouth. Experience and exposure to more different things is the best teacher.

Well, first of all I am sorry you have to deal with this person, it is quite unfortunate. However I would not remain quiet, but rather say something that is polite yet cool, cool as in insulting but in a classy way. if he or she ever make a statement speak up and retort what they said. I am sure he/she is either looking for someone to fight with, but as long as you maintain your cool and speak eloquently you should be fine!! And hopefully you will shut him/her up!!

Some people are very narrow minded. From what you say, he is not worth your time. Be a bigger person and do not comment back; some people's ideas and beliefs will not change.

You don't say how this person relates to your life. If he is a relative just tell him to stop showing everyone who ignorant he is.
That could go for almost everyone else as well, though I wouldn't say that if it were my boss.
Tell him to mind his own business and leave you alone.
